When you have a small living room, it is painfully obvious that you have some design problems built in. Trying to fit everything is only the start of your issues. You also have to figure out functionality, design and where to put that pesky television. Small living rooms can be exquisite, however, if you consider a few design concepts and ideas. Here are some things to consider to create more space:
Less Is More
Obviously you want to put what you like in your living room and you should if it means a great deal to you. Just keep in mind that the more stuff you put in a small space, the more cramped you will be. When you have a small living room, the first thing you should do is minimize what you need. For example, can you put the television in a den or family room? Just by making your living room more of a sitting room for friends and family you are creating a space that can be manipulated much easier. If you must include a television, then find a way to mount it on the wall to increase space. Find ways to take things out and you are off to a good start.
Remember That Open Pathways Are A Good Thing
When you are laying out your furniture in your living room, keep in mind that you should always keep walkways open. This is practical in a logical sense, but it is also visually good because it opens the room. When you look at closed off, boxed in furniture designs it automatically creates cramped visuals.
In a tight room, vertical space should be utilized as much as you can. When you can get a taller, skinnier piece of furniture, then you would do well to look into it. Going up with storage is a good thing as well. You can buy vertical themed cabinets that will give you a ton of extra space for knickknacks and the like. Keep it minimal, but buy a few pieces that go vertical.
Find Multi-Use Furniture
The best type of furniture is the kind that can be used for several purposes. Ottomans that can also keep storage inside are wonderful. These little pieces can give you a great deal of storage space that does not have to be seen at all by the naked eye. There are also wonderful designs in coffee tables and end tables that provide similar use.
Creating space in a living room that is too small is primarily about thinking minimal, but it is also about finding ways to store creatively. Use vertical space carefully and you will find that your small space is not so small after all.
