There is a huge growth in the Green market. Consumers are being hit with energy price increases which have made the news recently, as the big energy companies raise their prices due to prices in wholesale and delivery. Also, during the recession business have been looking to cut their costs, especially with heating of offices and commercial premises. EU governments are also being targeted on emissions. Each EU country has strict guidelines and targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These factors, along with a growing conscious of green needs among consumers has further heightened this demand.
A new army of trained professionals are visiting houses and businesses to advise customers how to “green” their home and reduce the energy required. These people have completed energy assessor training and are also assisting consumers with details on how to apply for government grants along the way. There is a continual need for new Domestic Energy Assessors to fulfil this role. The UK National Careers Service describes the role like this:
“In this job you test the energy efficiency of houses and suggest how it can be improved. If you are interested in saving energy and like being out and about, this job could be ideal for you.
To do this job, you will need to be able to work well with a wide range of people. You will need good time-management skills. You will also need knowledge of buildings and heating systems.
To become a domestic energy assessor (DEA) you would need a Level 3 Certificate in Domestic Energy Assessment.”
Many domestic energy assessor courses can be taken at home as distance learning, or in a classroom environment.
A green deal advisor training company offers courses to help individuals qualify for this role. As part of the learning programme most students will be required to produce a sample portfolio made up of 5 EPC surveys based on 5 real buildings. The course ensures that the assessor has the knowledge and experience to spot areas where energy saving is possible.
For the consumer, the benefits are clear. An assessor will come to inspect the property and discuss the energy use. After a thorough assessment they will provide a Green Deal Advice Report. This outlines what improvements can be made and estimate how much it could save on the user’s energy bills. There is no obligation to complete this work, or it can be completed by someone other than recommended by the green deal advisor.
The UK government is currently offering grants and subsidies for a wide range of improvements. Part of the green deal training is in providing the consumer with relevant information about the deals on offer and the method of applying.
