One of the true pleasures of owning your own home is getting to spend quiet evenings relaxing in your back yard. This is especially true if you’ve taken the time to add simple landscaping features like gardens, water fountains and mood enhancing lighting systems. Unfortunately, the yard we dream about and the yard we’ve actually got are two very different animals.
The truth of the matter is that most of our backyards could probably use a little bit work, or even a full backyard makeover. If this sounds like your outdoor living areas, here are a few tips to help you make them over and starting getting a lot more use from them.
Make it Green
Nothing makes a backyard look better than lush plant life and fragrant flowers. Plant life not only gives your backyard some real depth, it also helps attractive wildlife, and even butterflies.
If you’ve got a green thumb, you’ll definitely want to look into planting fragrant flower and herb gardens. These plants not only smell great, the herbs can be used to add a hint of freshness to almost any meal you’ve got on deck.
Even if you’re not interested in maintaining a garden, there are plenty of low-maintenance shrubs and trees that can help bring a slice of nature to your backyards oasis.
Backyards don’t have to be boring. In fact, most of us recall our childhood backyards as our own personal playgrounds. Whether it’s a volleyball net; a horseshoe pit; or a bocce ball court you need something in your backyard that makes it a lively, exciting place to be.
Of course fun doesn’t have to be limited to games. You can also up the fun factor with whimsical statuary, like garden gnomes. The bottom line here is that boring backyards aren’t likely to see much use; they need something to draw in family and friends.
Light it Up
You’re less likely to enjoy soft summer nights if your backyard is a black hole, so you’ll definitely want to install some outdoor lighting fixtures in your outdoor spaces. A couple, well placed, flood lights can turn a yard into a very inviting nighttime destination.
One great way of making landscape lighting work well in outdoor spaces is by using it to illuminate shrubbery or trees. This type of lighting scheme focuses on natural features and makes the whole space feel enchanted and exciting.
If you’re really feeling like taking your outdoor lighting to the next level, you can even use some colored bulbs to change the entire feeling of the yard.
Turning a dull backyard into an outdoor destination is a lot easier than you might think and can usually be done over the course of a single weekend. The key to success in this department is making certain that you’ve done plenty of advance planning before you do anything like tear down a fence or plant a tree.
Take some time to look through home and garden TV and magazines to get some ideas and then comb the web to see step-by-step video guides. With a little elbow grease, you can easily turn a dull yard into something really special.
