Welcome to Intel Mixx Blog ..
Let’s hope you never have to meet with a car accident. But for argument’s sake, let’s say you do. It isn’t the most favorable to be in. Not only do you have to deal with the accident at hand, but then you have to worry about dealing with the insurance companies involved. Making sure the damages are fixed and paid for. It’s stressful as it is, and it would be better if you didn’t have to worry about anything else adding to it. So say, you’ve just met with an accident. What do you do? Here’s what you do.
Note the date, time and location of the accident
You have to be well-prepared for when you speak to the concerned insurance provider. It’s important for you to have all your details in order and your facts straight if you want the entire claim process to go off smoothly. Make it a point to immediately note down the date and time of the accident. If you have a mobile phone on you at the time of the accident, take pictures of the location and the accident scene. The more, the better.
Take down the name, address and contact details of the other driver
You often hear about this. Someone gets hit by a car. The other driver admits to it being his mistake. He promises to call and have his insurance pay for the damages…and then POOF! The driver disappears without a trace, and with him any promise of having his insurance pay for damages. You don’t want to deal with that, so it’d be best if you got the name, address, contact details, along with the driver’s license number just to be on the safe side. Similarly, take down the year, make, model, and vehicle identification number (VIN) of the other vehicle.
Detailed description of injuries sustained
If someone’s hurt, write down a detailed description of the injuries along with photographs to prove them.
Details of witnesses
If there happened to be anyone who witnessed the accident, make sure you get the name and contact details for each of these witnesses. This will help strengthen your claim and make a stronger case when speaking to the insurance company.
Details of the police report
If a police report has been filed, make it a point to note down important details of the conversation you have with the police station. Make notes about the responding police department, the police case number as well as the officer’s name.
In case you speak to the other party’s insurance company…
In case, it’s the other party’s fault, make sure you speak to his/her insurance company right away. Once you do, take down the details of his car insurance company, insurance agent (name and phone number), and policy number of the other vehicle’s driver. In case, they don’t follow through, you’ll want to have these details on you to give your own auto insurance provider.
Be vigilant and make it a point to document every relevant detail so you can present it to the insurance company while making a claim. Well documented details will help you settle your claim better.
