Once seen only in kids with crooked teeth, braces are now popular among adults who want a beautiful smile. These corrective appliances are used to straighten teeth and correct facial irregularities. Life with braces does not have to be much different than life before braces. However, during your orthodontic treatment, you are likely to face small accidents, such as wires poking your teeth or braces becoming loose. With proper management and dental care, you can deal with loose braces efficiently and easily. Let us find out how.
About loose braces
Loose braces are the metallic or ceramic pieces that are attached to your teeth using composite resin. These metallic pieces can become loose due to a number of reasons, such as eating hard or chewy food, biting fingernails, playing with your braces, improper bonding between tooth and bracket, any change in bite or injury or trauma to the mouth.
This is generally not an emergency unless it is associated with pain or discomfort. In some cases, the loose brackets or braces might irritate your inner cheek, gums or tongue.
How to deal with loose braces?
In most of the cases, loose braces remain attached to the arch wire. In that case, you will just have to apply little amount of orthodontic wax on the loose bracket to prevent irritation. By applying wax and preventing further irritation on the soft tissues and provide you some comfort, you can wait till you get an appointment with your orthodontist.
However, in case the bracket moves back and forth on the arch wire, you will need to reposition it using tweezers. Before you use tweezers, make sure you sterilize them carefully so as to avoid infection in your mouth. Reposition it gently and apply orthodontic or dental wax to prevent irritation of gums, tongue or mouth.
If the bracket comes out completely, remove it and bring it to your dentist during your next appointment. Use the tweezers to carefully remove the ligature or the small rubber band that holds the arch wire in to the place on the brackets. Remove the bracket or brace gently by twisting it from the arch wire. Make sure you do not bend the wire while removing bracket as it may alter the movement of your teeth. Clean the loose bracket and place it in a clean plastic bag. Make the appointment with your orthodontist as early as possible as the absence of metal bracket will delay the treatment process.
Remember, a loose orthodontic appliance will not move the teeth to their proper positions. This will result in delay in the treatment progress. Hence, schedule your appointment with your orthodontist to repair the problem as soon as possible.
Braces bring a radical change in your smile as well as your confidence. During orthodontic treatment, it is essential that you properly take care of your braces. Braces require an investment of time and attention. By managing minor problems like loose braces, you can ensure that your orthodontic treatment is going in the right pace.
