Furniture is an investment, particularly when it’s covered in designer upholstery fabric. To keep that investment in top shape, you have to know how to safely clean it. Here are some tips.
The most beautiful furniture with lavish designer upholstery fabric won’t be beautiful for long if spills and messes aren’t cleaned promptly, safely and correctly. Some consumers are hesitant to break out the cleaning solutions and go to work on their dirtied upholstery for fear of ruining it.
It’s good to be cautious, but there are ways this fine furniture fabric can be cleaned without it being damaged. If any paperwork or an owner’s manual came with the furniture, consult that first. Or check the manufacturer’s website. You might be told how to clean specific types of material.
In most cases, you’ll be able to safely shampoo your stained furniture at home. But look for a tag on the furniture that will tell you if the fabric is dry-clean-only. If you can’t find a tag, call the company you bought it from or, as mentioned above, look at paperwork that came with the furniture or check the manufacturer’s website.
Spot cleaning designer fabric isn’t difficult. Good results often come from a simple mixture of 1/4 cup of dishwashing liquid and 1 cup of warm water. Whip the mixture with an egg beater until it’s foamy. Using a soft, clean cloth or a brush with soft bristles, rub the soap into the fabric, covering small sections at a time. Then remove the soap (and the stain) with a damp cloth, rinsing and re-applying as necessary.
For most stains, this will be sufficient. For stubborn stains such as grape juice or coffee, you might consult a specialist (or, again, the place where you bought the furniture or its manufacturer) to be directed to a stronger cleaning solution that won’t harm designer upholstery fabric.
The key to successfully removing any stain is getting to work on it immediately. The longer the substance has to seat within the material, the more difficult it will be to remove it. But if you get on the job quickly, you’ll find that you can effectively and inexpensively clean even the highest quality designer fabrics.
