James’s Fifty Shades of Grey has worked its way into every corner of our culture and empowered women everywhere along the way. With a movie on the way, it was only a matter of time until the madly popular book made its way to the stage. The global literary sensation can now be enjoyed visually, although in a much different light.
What the Musical is about
After a successful outing at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh and also in Chicago, 50 Shades! The Musical is now being performed in front of sold-out audiences in New York. The musical parody of the popular erotica novel was created by a Chicago-based improve group Baby Wants Candy. The group’s name gives insight into the hilarity of the show. The musical is centered on a middle-aged bored housewives book club that gathers to giggle over the erotic tale of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.
50 Shades! The Musical is Unadulterated Fun
The entire musical spoof truly takes form and comes to life when the extremely unattractive potbellied Christian Grey, hilariously funny Anastasia Steele, barely clothed dancers, and the horny housewives start singing off-the-wall side-stingingly show tunes. The outrageous show tunes include, “I Don’t Make Love, I F#*!,” “There’s a Hole Inside of Me,” and nine other raunchy hilarious tunes that effectively parody the book’s main characters.
The performance also has plenty of non-musical bawdy dialogue and acting scenes. One particular scene has the audience on the edge of their seats with every performance. This particular scene has Christian’s character, dressed as the Phantom of the Opera, taking Anastasia into his secret underground “Red Room of Pain.” The play is overtly raunchy, but it wisely steers clear of nudity and anything overtly explicit. Continuing with this scene in Christian’s secret lair, the stage design is filled with sexual props and there is an emphasis on the simulation of BDSM. During the climax of the scene, white streamers explode upon the stage. Not hard to figure out the symbolism there. The dialogue between Christian and Anastasia is just as bawdy as the song lyrics, set design, and props. In one scene Christian mentions his fascination with fisting, after some simulation, Anastasia “almost lost her sh*#!”.
Witness the Show for Yourself
So, just when you thought the world was starting to tire of the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon, evidently there are an abundance of people who get a kick out of bawdy BDSM humor. Don’t wait until the movie is released. Get your Broadway theatre tickets if this sounds like a fun time for you as well.
